Zara the zebra lived on the wide, grassy savanna with her herd.

One day, she looked into the watering hole at her reflection. "My stripes are wiggly," she said. "Why don't they look like Mama's stripes?"

She looked at her friend Zeke. His stripes were thick. She looked at Grandpa. His stripes were thin and close together.

"Everybody's stripes are different," Zara frowned. "I wish mine matched."

Mama nuzzled her gently. "Zara, no two zebras in the whole world have the same stripes. Your stripes are yours alone — like a fingerprint."

"Really?" asked Zara.

"Really," said Mama. "When you were a tiny foal, I learned your stripes so I could always find you, even in the biggest herd."

Just then, the herd started running across the plain — thundering hooves and swishing tails everywhere! Zara got mixed up in the crowd.

But soon she heard Mama calling. "Zara! I see your wiggly stripes!" Mama found her in a flash.

Zara looked at her stripes again. This time, she smiled. "My wiggly stripes are the best stripes," she said. "Because they're mine!"
