The Rainy-Day Picnic
Rain spoils Zoey's picnic plans. Feeling disappointed is hard, but her family finds a new way to have fun.
All week, Zoey had been looking forward to Saturday. A picnic in the park with Grandma! She had made a list: sandwiches, apples, a blanket, and her new kite.
On Saturday morning, Zoey ran to the window. The sky was gray. Rain was pattering on the glass. Plip, plop, plip.
"Oh no," said Zoey. Her face crumpled. "It's ruined. Everything is ruined."
Grandma sat beside her. "You are disappointed," she said. "That is a big, heavy feeling. It's okay to feel it."
Zoey cried a little, and Grandma held her hand. After a while, the heavy feeling got a bit lighter.
"I have an idea," said Grandma. "What if the picnic comes inside?"
They pushed the sofa back and spread the blanket on the living room floor. Zoey's little brother Sam made a sun out of yellow paper and stuck it to the lamp.
They made sandwiches cut into triangles. They put the apples in a basket. Zoey drew some paper ants and lined them up on the blanket. "Uninvited guests," she giggled.
They listened to the rain on the roof while they ate. It sounded like a drum. Sam pretended to be a duck who loved puddles. Grandma told stories about picnics when she was a girl.
In the afternoon, the rain stopped and a rainbow appeared. "Maybe next week we can fly my kite," said Zoey.
"It's a date," said Grandma. "But I think this might have been the best picnic ever."
