"Not yet," said Mama. "First we have dinner, then a bath, then a story, then sleep."

Poppy's legs wanted to jump. Her mouth wanted to sing. Her whole body felt fizzy. "Waiting is hard!" she said.

Mama said, "Let's get ready together." So they blew up balloons, one red, one yellow, one blue. Poppy helped stir the cake.

After dinner, and a bath, and a story, Poppy closed her eyes. And then she slept.

In the morning, the balloons were floating. The cake had candles. "Happy birthday, Poppy!" called everyone. "Now it is my birthday!" said Poppy.
