Koala and Kangaroo on the Seesaw
Koala and Kangaroo want to play on the seesaw, but Kangaroo is much heavier. Can they make it balance?
Koala and Kangaroo found a seesaw in the park. "Let's play!" said Koala. She sat on one end. Kangaroo sat on the other.
Thump! Kangaroo's end went straight down to the ground. Koala's end shot up into the air.
"Help!" laughed Koala, with her legs dangling. "I'm stuck up here!"
"You are much lighter than me," said Kangaroo. "I am too heavy. It is never going to work."
Wombat waddled over. "What if Koala had a helper?" he said. He climbed on next to Koala. The seesaw tipped a little, but Kangaroo's end still stayed down.
"Still too heavy," sighed Kangaroo.
Then Owl flew down to the middle of the seesaw. "Try this," she said. "Kangaroo, move closer to the middle."
Kangaroo shuffled toward the middle, one hop at a time. Slowly, slowly, Koala's end came down. Then the seesaw was flat and still.
"It balances!" cried Koala. "How did that work?"
"When someone heavy sits near the middle, and someone light sits at the end, the seesaw can balance," said Owl. "The far end gives the lighter person more push."
Koala pushed off with her feet, and up she went. Kangaroo pushed off, and up he went. Up, down, up, down.
"Being different sizes isn't a problem," said Kangaroo, "if you know where to sit."
