Gus Gorilla woke up on the wrong side of his nest. His fur was sticking up. He had a crick in his neck. And it was raining.

"Hmph," said Gus.

His sister handed him a banana. It was the spotty, squishy kind. "Hmph," said Gus.

His friend Parrot flew by. "Good morning, Gus!" she sang. "It is not a good morning," grumbled Gus, and he turned his back.

Parrot landed on a branch. "You seem grumpy," she said kindly.

"I'm not grumpy!" said Gus grumpily. Then he stopped. "Okay. Maybe I am a little bit grumpy."

"Everybody has grumpy days," said Parrot. "What would help?"

Gus thought. "I don't know," he said.

"When I'm grumpy," said Parrot, "I take three big breaths, then I do something I like."

Gus took a big breath. In through his nose, out through his mouth. Then another. And another. His shoulders came down a little.

The rain was slowing down. Gus climbed his favorite tree and looked out over the forest. Drips sparkled on every leaf.

His sister climbed up beside him with a new banana, a yellow one this time. "Sorry about the squishy one," she said.

"Sorry I was grumpy," said Gus. They shared the banana, half each. "This morning started badly," said Gus, "but it's getting better."
