The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse
Two mouse cousins visit each other's homes and discover what really matters.
Country Mouse lived in a cozy hole under a farm fence. One day her cousin, Town Mouse, came to visit.
Country Mouse served her best food: seeds, a few berries and a crunchy bit of corn.
Town Mouse nibbled politely. "Cousin, how can you live like this? Come to town with me. I will show you real food!"
So off they went to a big house in the city. In the dining room was a table piled high with cake, cheese, bread and jam.
Country Mouse's eyes grew wide. "It's a feast!"
But just as she took her first bite of cheese, the door banged open. "RUN!" squeaked Town Mouse. A cook came in with a broom!
The mice hid in a crack in the wall, their hearts pounding. When it was quiet again, they crept back to the table. Then β MEOW! The house cat leaped onto a chair.
They ran again, faster than ever. Country Mouse was shaking from her ears to her tail.
"Thank you, cousin," she said, "but I am going home. I would rather eat simple seeds in peace than fancy cake in fear."
And back under the farm fence, Country Mouse curled up in her cozy hole and slept soundly all night.
