The Snowman Who Wanted Summer
Flurry dreams of seeing summer. What happens to a snowman when the weather gets warm?
In the middle of a snowy yard stood a snowman named Flurry. He had a carrot nose, a red scarf and a very big wish.
"I want to see summer," Flurry told the robin on his branch arm. "I hear there are flowers and ice cream and splashing pools!"
The robin tilted her head. "But Flurry, you're made of snow. When it gets warm, snow melts."
Flurry wasn't worried. "Then I'll find a way."
Days passed. The sun climbed higher. Drip... drip... drip. Flurry got smaller and smaller until he was just a puddle, a scarf and a carrot.
But Flurry wasn't gone. As the sun warmed the puddle, tiny bits of water rose up into the air as invisible vapor. This is called evaporation.
High in the sky, the cool air turned the water vapor into tiny droplets. They gathered together into a fluffy white cloud. This is called condensation.
"I'm a cloud!" Flurry cheered. From way up high, he could see green grass, blooming flowers and kids splashing in pools. It was summer!
When the cloud got heavy, Flurry fell down as warm summer rain β splish, splash! β right into a garden full of sunflowers. This is called precipitation.
All summer long, Flurry traveled: puddle to cloud, cloud to rain, rain to river.
And when winter came again, the cold air turned him back into snowflakes. He floated down into the very same yard, where a little girl rolled him into a snowman once more.
"Welcome back, Flurry," said the robin. Flurry grinned. "What a trip!"
