The Scarecrow Who Wanted Friends
Every bird flies away from Sam the Scarecrow. But Sam doesn't want to scare anyone — he wants a friend.
In the middle of Farmer Lin's cornfield stood a scarecrow named Sam. He had a straw hat, a red checked shirt and a big stitched smile.
Sam had one job: to keep the birds away from the corn. And he was very good at it. Whenever a bird came near, it took one look at Sam and flew off in a flutter.
But Sam didn't feel proud. He felt lonely. "I don't want to scare anyone," he sighed. "I just want someone to talk to."
One chilly morning, a small bluebird landed on the fence. She was shivering, and one of her wings was bent.
"Please don't chase me away," she peeped. "I can't fly very far today."
"Chase you?" said Sam. "I would never! You can rest on my hat. The straw is nice and warm."
So the bluebird, whose name was Juniper, snuggled into the straw on Sam's hat. Sam told her stories about the moon and the sunflowers, and Juniper sang him songs.
Day by day, her wing grew stronger. And Sam noticed something wonderful: Juniper never touched the corn. She ate the bugs that were nibbling the leaves instead!
When Farmer Lin saw the healthy corn, she smiled. "Sam, you and your little friend make a great team."
By the end of autumn, Juniper's whole family came to visit. They perched on Sam's arms and sang, and the cornfield was the happiest place on the farm.
Sam's stitched smile had never looked so real.
