The Monster Who Wanted a Costume
Gloop the monster wants to go trick-or-treating. But what costume should a monster wear?
Gloop was a big green monster with one round eye, two little horns and a smile full of friendly teeth.
Every year, Gloop watched the children walk past his cave on Halloween night. There were pirates and princesses, robots and dinosaurs. Everyone looked so happy.
"This year, I want to go trick-or-treating too!" Gloop decided. "I just need a costume."
First, Gloop tried being a pirate. But the hat was too small for his horns. Pop! It flew off.
Next, he tried being a robot. He covered himself in boxes and foil. But when he sneezed — ACHOO! — the boxes went everywhere.
Then he tried being a ghost with a big white sheet. But he couldn't see where he was going, and he walked right into a tree.
Gloop sat down on a rock and sighed a big monster sigh.
Just then, a girl in a pointy witch hat walked by with her black cat. Her name was Rosie.
"Hi!" said Rosie. "What an AMAZING monster costume! How did you make your eye blink like that?"
Gloop blinked. "It's... not a costume. I'm a real monster."
Rosie grinned. "Then you're the best monster on the whole street! Want to come trick-or-treating with us?"
So Gloop went trick-or-treating just as he was. At every door, people said, "Wow, what a great costume!" and Gloop just smiled his friendly-toothed smile.
It turned out the best costume of all was being himself.
