In a snowy forest lived a pack of wolves. The smallest pup was named Luna, and she was very independent.

"I can find my own food," she said. "I can find my own way. I don't need the pack."

Her mother nuzzled her. "A wolf pack is like a family. We work together, and we look after each other."

But Luna wanted to prove she could do it alone. One evening, while the pack was resting, she wandered off to explore.

She followed a rabbit's tracks. She chased a falling leaf. She sniffed an interesting log. Soon, the trees all looked the same, and big snowflakes began to fall.

Luna couldn't smell her way home. The snow covered every track. The wind was getting colder.

An owl hooted from a branch. "Little wolf, you look lost. Why don't you call your pack?"

Luna lifted her nose to the moon and howled. "Ahwooooo!" Her voice was small in the big, snowy forest.

For a moment, there was only silence. Then — far away — "Ahwooooooo!" Her mother's howl! Then her father's. Then her brothers' and sisters'. The whole pack was howling back.

Luna followed the sound through the snow, howling and listening, howling and listening, until she tumbled right into a pile of warm, furry family.

"You found us," said her mother.

"You helped me find you," said Luna, snuggling close. "I guess I do need the pack." Her father licked her ear. "And the pack needs you, too."
