Marina the mermaid lived in a coral reef full of color. Pink coral, orange fish and green sea turtles made it the brightest place in the ocean.

But one morning, something strange floated by: a plastic bag. Then a bottle. Then a tangle of old fishing line.

A sea turtle swam up, coughing. "I thought that bag was a jellyfish," she said. "I almost ate it!"

Marina's tail swished angrily. "This doesn't belong in our home."

She called a meeting of all the sea creatures. The crabs came. The octopus came. Even a huge, gentle whale came.

"We need to clean up," said Marina. "Everyone can help."

The crabs used their claws to snip fishing line. The octopus used all eight arms to collect bottles. The whale pushed big piles of trash toward the shore with her nose.

On the beach, a group of children saw the trash washing up. "Where did all this come from?" asked a boy named Kai.

"From us," said his teacher sadly. "When trash isn't thrown away properly, it can end up in the ocean."

So the children picked it all up, sorted it into recycling bins and made posters for their town: "Keep Our Ocean Clean!"

From out in the waves, Marina watched and smiled. She flicked her tail, and a sparkle of water splashed in the sunlight — a mermaid's thank-you.
