The mice who lived in the old farmhouse were tired of being chased by the cat. So they held a big meeting under the floor.

"The cat is so quiet," said one mouse. "We never hear her coming!"

"We need a plan," said another.

A young mouse jumped up. "I have it! We tie a bell around the cat's neck. Then whenever she comes near β€” jingle, jingle β€” we will hear her and run away!"

All the mice cheered. "What a clever idea! Hooray!"

Then an old gray mouse cleared his throat. Everyone went quiet.

"It is a very good plan," he said slowly. "But tell me β€” which one of us will tie the bell on the cat?"

The mice looked at each other. Nobody said a word. One by one, they found something very interesting to look at on the floor.

The old mouse smiled. "An idea is only as good as our ability to make it happen. Let's think of a plan we can really do."

So they did. They agreed to take turns as a lookout at the door β€” and that plan worked very well.
