The Team That Learned to Pass
The Tigers have the best player in the league — and they keep losing. Coach Rivera has a strange idea.
The Tigers had Jada, and everybody knew it. Jada was the fastest, strongest soccer player in the whole under-10 league. When she got the ball, she dribbled past one defender, two, three, and blasted it into the net.
So why had the Tigers lost four games in a row?
Coach Rivera watched the next game carefully. Every time a Tiger got the ball, they looked for Jada and kicked it toward her. The other team had figured this out. They put three players around Jada and waited.
Jada tried to dribble through them. She lost the ball. The other team scored.
After the game, the Tigers sat on the grass, glum. "We need Jada to score more," said a boy named Felix.
"No," said Coach Rivera. "We need everyone to score more."
At the next practice, the coach announced a new rule for their scrimmage. "Nobody can shoot until the ball has been passed four times."
Everyone groaned, especially Jada. "But I could just score!"
"Four passes," said the coach.
At first it was a mess. Passes went to nobody. The ball rolled out of bounds. Felix passed to himself by accident. But slowly, something changed. The players started looking up. They started calling to each other: "I'm open!" "Behind you!" "Switch!"
Jada learned that when three defenders ran at her, it meant someone else was wide open. Felix learned that he had a really good left foot. Quiet Min-seo, who never got the ball, turned out to be amazing at reading where it would go next.
On Saturday, the Tigers played the Eagles, the best team in the league. As expected, the Eagles surrounded Jada. But this time, Jada didn't try to dribble through them. She tapped the ball sideways to Felix. Felix passed forward to Min-seo. Min-seo slipped it back to Jada, who was suddenly all alone.
GOAL!
The Eagles didn't know who to guard. Every Tiger was a threat. By the end of the game, four different players had scored, and the Tigers won 5 to 2.
After the game, Jada found Min-seo and gave her a high five. "That pass was perfect."
Min-seo smiled shyly. "Your goals are perfect."
Coach Rivera gathered them together. "One great player can win some games," she said. "But a great team can win almost anything."
